Calculation of the amount of laminate by area

Let's assume you have already calculated the total area of the room. After this, add the percentage for trimming to the resulting number and divide the amount by the area of the lamellas in the package. Round the number up.

Example

The task is to calculate the amount of material for installation in the usual way (deck masonry) in a room measuring 6.40 m x 3.10 m. The area of one package is 2.15 m?.

Solution - the formula K = (S + 5% S) : Sу is suitable here, where % S is the increase for trimming. In this case 5%.

  1. 6.40 x 3.10 = 19.84 m? (room area);
  2. 19.84 m? x 0.05 = 0.992 m? (5% for cuts);
  3. 19.84 m? + 0.992 m? = 20.832 m? (total area).

20.832 m? /2.15 m? = 9.689

! The number of packages should be rounded up - 10 packs.

Be sure that when you finish the job you will have some extra planks left over. Don't rush to return them to the store or throw them away. In most cases, they are used during the operational period, when it becomes necessary to replace a damaged board.

This was the calculation of the amount of laminate by area during direct installation, but what about diagonal?

Example

The task is to calculate the amount of material for installation diagonally in a room measuring 18 m2.

Solution - the formula K = (S + 10% S) : Sу is suitable here, where % S is the increase for trimming. In this case - 10%. The area of one package is 2 m².

  1. 18 m? m? (room area);
  2. 18 m? x 0.1 = 1.8 m? (10% for cutting);
  3. 18 m? + 1.8 m? = 19.8 m? (total area).

19.8 m? /2 m? = 9.9 => 10 packs of lamellas, since any number obtained is always rounded up.

Also, when purchasing packages, you need to take into account the fact that different manufacturers have completely different footage. Could it be like 2m? or 2.5 m?, or 3 m?. Depending on the batch, the lamellas also differ slightly in size. Although these are just millimeters, they also play a very important role. That is why it is also very important to pay special attention to whether all the packs are from the same series. This will be a kind of guarantee that all panels are the same color, texture and size.

! In such cases as non-standard room geometry, the presence of steps and columns, always try to make a drawing of the room, taking into account all the features. Then you can more accurately calculate the number of planks, their sizes and waste for cutting.

Do not forget that when calculating the laminate you also need to take care of the amount of skirting boards. So, the calculation algorithm is as follows:

  • calculating the perimeter of the room taking into account the width of doorways;
  • increase for cutting – 5%;
  • divide the amount by the length of one baseboard;
  • round up to the nearest whole number.

Example

The task is to calculate the number of plinths for installation in a room with an area of 18.2 m2. The width of the doorway is 80 cm. The length of one plinth stick is 2.5 m.

Solution -

  1. 18.2 m? (perimeter of the room minus the size of the doorway);
  2. 18.2 x 0.05 = 0.91 m? (5% for cuts);
  3. 18.2 m? + 0.91 m? = 19.11 m? (total length);
  4. 19.11 m? / 2.50 = 8.3.

The required number of skirting boards is 9 pieces.

How to calculate the amount of laminate manually?

In order to calculate the amount of laminate with your own hands, you should follow a few simple steps.

As we already wrote, you need to find out the length and width of the room in order to determine the area. If your room is rectangular (square), then no problems will arise - multiply the two values and get the area in square meters. If it has an irregular shape, then the easiest way would be to draw a diagram, divide the room into simpler pieces, then calculate the area of each of them using the first method and sum them up.

Then we divide the area of the room by the area of the laminate in the package (multiply the area of the panel by the number of pieces). With a high probability you will end up with a fractional number, round up.

It is important to think about how you are going to lay the flooring. The calculation of laying laminate diagonally differs significantly from the direct installation method. In the first case, the amount of material consumption will increase by approximately 10-15% - do not forget about this!

We recommend that you always make a small supply of laminate - 5% will be more than enough.
This will save you from problems that may arise if you accidentally damage the coating.

Calculation of laminate flooring per room

You can also use the calculator for calculation, which is located in the product card. To do this, go to the product catalog. Click on the laminate design you like and you will be taken to the product card with its characteristics, where you can calculate the cost and the required number of packages for the room of this flooring model.

One of the most important steps in preparing to lay laminate flooring is calculating the amount of material required. If the calculations are made correctly, then you can significantly save both money when purchasing building materials and your own labor costs. However, not everyone is able to make the correct calculation. Someone will consider this matter too troublesome and will turn to specialists for help. However, everything is not as complicated as it seems at first glance. All you need is a few formulas and basic arithmetic skills. This will be discussed in this article.

Laminate calculation: key points

Before starting work, you should remember a few simple rules: • 1. It is necessary to take into account the installation method. With standard (deck) installation, about 4-5% should be added to the area of the room. This is the amount of laminate that will be used for trimming. With the diagonal method, this figure is in the range of 10-15%. • 2. Calculating the area of a room is very simple - multiply the length and width of the room. Premises of non-standard sizes require drawing and more complex calculations. • 3. It is not recommended to buy lamellas in several batches. Immediately purchase the required number of packages (divide the estimated laying area, taking into account trimming, by the area of the lamellas in one pack). • 4. After purchasing, take out one lamella. Having measured its length and width, check the accuracy of the previous calculations.

Buy laminate not only in the required quantity, but also with a small margin, since the installation process may be delayed precisely because the material runs out for one reason or another. This situation is not uncommon, so you should take care of everything in advance. Be prepared that after installation you will have several lamellas left. Don't try to return them to the store or throw them away. Surely they will come in handy in the future if you need to replace damaged strips.

Preparation for calculation

Before you start doing the arithmetic, ask about the dimensions of the laminated coating and the method of its assembly (adhesive, interlocking). Typically, different manufacturers produce panels of different formats and with different dimensions of lamellas in the package. It happens that even for the same manufacturer these parameters differ in different shipments.

Measure the areas of the rooms in which you intend to install laminate flooring. For ease of calculations, it is recommended to draw a plan of each room indicating all dimensions. The drawing should show doorways, heating radiators and other objects that affect the topography of the room. It will be especially difficult to do without such a pattern if the rooms have non-standard geometric shapes and certain architectural delights (stairs, columns, etc.).

You should also consider the method of laying the laminate flooring. If you plan to do the flooring using the direct (deck) method, then you should add 5% to the calculated area for trimming. If you want to orient the lamellas diagonally, then the cost of trimming will be 10%.

Calculation of the amount of material by area

Let's say you calculated the area of the room. Then add the interest on the cut to this figure and divide the amount by the area of the panels in one pack. Round the result to a larger integer value to obtain the required number of packages.

Task No. 1 (an example of calculating a laminate for deck installation) Determine the amount of laminate for installation in a deck manner in a room measuring 6.5 by 4 m. The area of the panels in a pack is 2.5 m2.

Solution We apply the formula K = (S + Sp) / Sy, where Sp is the additional area for trimming. When laying on deck, Sp = 10% S. • 6.5 * 4 = 26 m2 (room area). • 26 * 0.05 = 1.3 m2 (trimming area). • 26 + 1.3 = 27.3 m2 (total area). • 27.3 / 2.5 = 10.92. Round to the nearest integer value. Answer: 11 packs.

Task No. 2 (an example of calculating a laminate for diagonal installation)

Calculate the amount of laminate purchased for diagonal laying in a room of 17 m2. The area of the lamellas in the package is 2.5 m2.

Solution We use the formula K = (S + Sp) / Sy, where Sp is the additional area for trimming. When laying diagonally, Sp = 10% S. • 17 * 0.1 = 1.7 m2 (trimming area). • 17 + 1.7 = 18.7 m2 (total area). • 18.7 / 2.5 = 7.48. Round up. Answer: 8 packs.

Also, when purchasing laminate, it is important to consider that different packaging manufacturers may contain different areas of material. It can be 2, 2.5 or 3 square meters. m. Depending on the specific delivery batch, even the lamellas themselves may vary in size. Perhaps the error will be several millimeters, but this must also be taken into account in terms of the total area. It is advisable to take packages from the same batch. This is a guarantee that all lamellas will be the same shade, texture and size.

After calculating the amount of laminate, it makes sense to think about baseboards. In this case, the calculation procedure is as follows: • determining the perimeter minus the width of the doorways; • additive for pruning – 5%; • the resulting amount is divided by the length of one strip; • the result is rounded up to a larger integer value.

Task No. 3

Calculate the number of skirting boards to be installed in a room with a total perimeter of 18 m. The width of the doorway is 90 cm. The length of one strip is 2 m. Solution. • 18 - 0.9 = 17.1 m (final laying perimeter without doorway). • 17.1 * 0.05 = 0.855 m (taking into account trimming). • 17.1 + 0.855 = 17.955 m (the entire length of the required material). • 17.955 / 2 = 8.9775. Let's round up. Answer: the number of plinth strips is 9 pieces.
