Screwdriver: buyer's guide

Types of screwdrivers

Depending on the capabilities and range of tasks to be solved, several types of screwdrivers can be distinguished. The simplest are basic electric screwdrivers and impact wrenches. Drills and screwdrivers are more complex and powerful devices; they can not only tighten screws, but also drill. Due to their versatility, drills and screwdrivers are the most common today. Finally, a relatively new type of tool is impulse screwdrivers (they are also called impact drivers). They are capable of increasing power several times for a very short time: such jerks help, for example, to unscrew old screws with stripped splines.

The most common types of electric screwdrivers are cordless, corded, and combined. For infrequent and not too intensive home use, battery-powered devices are best suited: they are more mobile and lighter. Network ones are indispensable for performing a large volume of work, and their engines are usually more powerful. Well, the combined ones are real universal soldiers.

Pneumatic screwdrivers are not so common: they operate on compressed air and are of no interest without a compressor. Well, hydraulic devices are truly exotic.

I would like to make a special mention of belt screwdrivers. They help out builders when large amounts of finishing work need to be completed. A strip of self-tapping screws or other fasteners is inserted into such devices: you tighten one screw, and the smart machine itself supplies the next charge in the clip. Very convenient and saves a lot of time.

How to choose the right corded screwdriver?

Not all characteristics will clearly indicate how a particular model will cope with the tasks assigned to it, however, a number of points will have to be taken into account without fail. First of all, you should make sure that the screwdriver fits comfortably in your hand, that all controls can be reached without difficulty, and so on. In this case, it will become much easier to use.

The power of a corded screwdriver directly informs how much electricity the tool will consume. Depending on the class of the unit, it can be equipped with a 100-900 W motor. Accordingly, professional equipment will be the most powerful. If you plan to use the tool not too often, it is best to give preference to a design with a power rating of around 500 W.

Torque provides information about the force with which a self-tapping screw, screw or other fastener is applied. The simplest devices are characterized by a torque of about 10-15 Nm, for professional ones the parameter increases to 30-35 Nm, on sale you can find products with a pulse mode, and so for them it increases to 100 Nm.

If you plan to use a screwdriver only for tightening and unscrewing screws, then the rotation speed of the chuck will not be too important. However, many home craftsmen often use the device instead of an ordinary drill - therefore, this parameter will be decisive for them. The higher the number of turns, the more accurate the hole will be. It is quite natural that absolutely all screwdrivers are equipped with a reverse or reverse function. Here you should look at how the mode switch lever is located - how convenient it will be to use it during operation.

The way the rotation speed changes is often of great interest to buyers of corded screwdrivers, especially if they plan to use the tool as a drill. Typically, for tightening screws, a number of revolutions of about 500 per minute is used, for drilling more - from 1500 to 2000 per minute. Typically, switching occurs either on the cartridge itself, or through a lever located on the upper side of the housing.

Pay attention to the shape of the screwdriver - the cheapest models are made in the form of a pistol. The design works quite well, but can heat up significantly during active use. More convenient is the T-shape, which is better balanced and practically does not strain the hand during operation. There are also screwdrivers that are shaped like a classic drill, but smaller in size - this is usually typical for a professional device.

When choosing models for inclusion in our rating of the best corded screwdrivers, we were guided mainly by the parameters discussed above. However, we also paid attention to some other factors - price-quality ratio, as well as user reviews. We tried to select not very expensive models so that you can choose the optimal product for yourself.

What to look for when choosing a screwdriver

The choice of a reliable assistant for your home depends on the purpose of the device and the materials you will have to work with. The main criteria are:

  1. Battery life and capacity. Nickel-metal hybrid batteries have a lifespan of 500 charges. Nickel-cadmium batteries have a lifespan of 1000 charges. The most expensive lithium-ion ones are designed for 3000 charge-discharge cycles. When choosing a screwdriver for home use, it is recommended to pay attention to models with a battery capacity of 1.2-1.5 Ah. Such equipment belongs to the middle price category and can work up to 3 hours without recharging. It is best if there are two batteries in the set: this will allow you to work without interruptions.
  2. Supply voltage. The higher the voltage, the more effective the tool is when working with large diameter holes and fasteners. The optimal voltage for a household appliance is considered to be 12-14 V.
  3. Maximum number of revolutions per minute. For home, the best choice would be to buy a device with two speeds at 1200 and 1500 rpm.
  4. Torque. The characteristic indicates the power of the model. Large numbers indicate the effectiveness of the tool when working with hard materials or when drilling large holes.
  5. Features of the cartridge device. A single-socket chuck is suitable for use at home, characterized by its simplicity and reliability in operation. Fewer components make work as simple and safe as possible.

The last thing you need to pay attention to when choosing a screwdriver is the options offered: the ability to drill and chisel, an additional battery, a second handle, an angle attachment, a carrying case, bits, attachments and other additional equipment.

Criteria for choosing a screwdriver and how to choose the right tool

Manufacturer

Like other tools, household and professional screwdrivers are produced by many companies. For work around the house and garden, it is recommended to pay attention to non-professional products from Bosch, Dewalt, Hitachi, Makita. In the case of a screwdriver, it’s not worth overpaying for devices that work around the clock.

Voltage and other battery parameters

For a cordless tool, the battery parameters are very important. It will depend on them how often you have to run to the charger and how long the tool will last.

Battery cells manufactured using any technology are connected into batteries in series and in parallel to obtain the specified parameters. Cell batteries are characterized by supply voltage and capacity.

The most common battery voltages: 12 V (15% of devices); 14.4 V (25% of devices) and 18 V (45% of devices), other voltages from 3.6 to 36 V are found in the remaining 15% of devices. In general, the higher the supply voltage, the higher the power of the tool.

Battery capacity is measured in ampere-hours and directly affects how long your screwdriver will work on a single charge. For household tools, the capacity does not exceed 3.0 ampere-hours; devices with more capacious batteries are classified as professional and cost several times more.

Torque

The torque developed by the screwdriver determines what materials you can drill and what screws you can drive.

For household tools, a torque of 15 to 30 newton meters is considered normal. This screwdriver can handle screwing a “black” screw (3.5 mm) 10 centimeters long into damp pine. For longer and thicker screws, large holes and dense materials, a torque of up to 40 Nm is required.

Craftsmen work with different materials, so the torque should be limited. If you screw a screw into soft pine as hard as you can, it will sink into the wood and ruin the workpiece. To limit torque, all screwdrivers have an adjusting ring with divisions - it is located immediately behind the chuck. As soon as the screw is screwed in completely, the torque limiter is activated. The motor is running, the chuck does not rotate, a ratcheting sound is heard.

To limit torque, all screwdrivers have an adjusting ring with divisions

A positive side effect is that if the drill jams at the exit from a dense material, the tool will not break out of your hands.

When driving a self-tapping screw into dense wood - birch, beech or oak, be sure to drill a hole with a diameter of at least 2/3 of the screw. The wood will not crack, and less effort will be required to twist it.

Rotation frequency

Universal screwdrivers, operating in two modes - screwdrivers and drills, are equipped with a speed switch. Working like a screwdriver, the tool provides a change in spindle speed from 0 to 400–500 rpm. In drill mode, the tool accelerates to 1300–1500 rpm.

If you are working with one tool, do not forget to switch the mode from drilling to screwdriving. If you tighten the screw too quickly, it will heat up and the wood will burn. A powerful tool will break the screw and the part will be ruined.

Tool holders

In modern screwdrivers, a chuck with a separate key is almost never used; it has been replaced by quick-clamping designs, in which changing a tool takes a few seconds.

To drill holes in the screwdriver chuck, a drill is installed instead of bits. For most screwdrivers, the maximum drill shank diameter is 10 mm.

In order for a screwdriver to not only tighten screws, but also disassemble threaded connections, it must have a reverse function—switching the direction of rotation of the chuck. This feature is useful if the drill bit is stuck in wood or metal; it can be easily removed by “backing it up.”

Additional features and functionality

Chuck brake. In a good screwdriver, the chuck is equipped with a brake that will instantly stop the rotation of the tool when the button is released. This increases the safety of the tool for the operator.

Illumination of the working area. A number of models are equipped with a light bulb, the light of which is directed to the place of work. Convenient to work in low light conditions.

Ergonomics and design. When working, the screwdriver is held by the handle, which should fit well in the hand, otherwise you can rub calluses. The controls should be accessible with one hand: the start button is under the index finger, reverse and gear shifting can be easily reached with the thumb. It’s convenient if unused bits are stuck into a holder on the case - they definitely won’t get lost. The professional tool has a fastening for a mounting belt.

Equipment. A good screwdriver is stored in a suitcase. The kit includes: a charger, at least two batteries, flat and Phillips bits.

Recently, screwdrivers without a battery and charger have appeared on sale; they cost half as much. The manufacturer assumes that the owner already has a flashlight, screwdriver or circular saw from the same company. Pay attention to the package so as not to make a mistake.

Impact drilling. This function makes a screwdriver similar to a hammer drill. You should not expect the same effect from a cordless tool. At best, it can handle bricks; for heavy work, we recommend using a hammer drill.

6. Interskol DSh-10/260E

Interskol DSh-10/260E photo

This is one of the cheapest models in our review, however, it is characterized by decent workmanship; it can be used both as a screwdriver and for drilling various materials that are not particularly durable. For example, it is unlikely that it will be possible to drill through thick steel using this device. The length of the wire is 2 meters - quite enough for indoor work, and it is not always necessary to use an extension cord. The design provides a special handle for switching speeds - it is two-position. The first position is designed for tightening screws, the second is made for switching to drilling mode.

The weight of the device is not very large - only 1.5 kg, so it is very convenient and easy to hold in your hand for a long time. The ergonomics are carefully thought out - the product is suitable for both people with large palms and those with short fingers. Bits and drills are installed in the chuck quickly, replacing them takes a minimum amount of time. When operating in the screw tightening mode, the initial rotation speed of the chuck is not very high, and then the device accelerates to 450 rpm. The cartridge stops quickly enough, the risk of injury is low. The body is made of reliable, highly durable plastic; there are rubberized inserts that give the product additional attractiveness.

HAMMER DRL400A

HAMMER DRL400A photo

The design is optimal for minor household work. The length of the power cable is 2 meters. It is positioned as a device that performs the functions of a hammerless drill, but during testing we tried to drill a 40 mm board with a 25 mm stylus - the product coped with this task with difficulty. The device weighs a little and has compact overall dimensions. It shows its useful qualities best when working with fasteners that are not too large. The engine here is not very powerful - only 280 W. It creates a torque of about 22 Nm, and at idle it develops up to 750 rpm - not very suitable for drilling, but for tightening screws and other products this parameter will be sufficient. The speed control system is electronic, reverse rotation is provided, there is only one speed mode, but it is adjustable.

The design has a quick-release chuck; the maximum diameter of the inserted drill is 10 mm. Almost no time or effort is wasted when replacing attachments. The cartridge carefully fixes them, reducing the likelihood of injury to zero. The case is made of special impact-resistant plastic; there are rubber inserts that do not allow the device to slip in the palms.

Advantages:

  • The cartridge has a high level of strength;
  • Insignificant mass;
  • Quite reasonable cost;
  • The torque control clutch is very sensitive;
  • If necessary, you can repair it yourself;
  • Sturdy gearbox.

Flaws:

  • Doesn't take lateral loads very well;
  • Some users have questions regarding the build quality.

CALIBER DE-550SHM

CALIBER DE-550SHM photo

A relatively powerful device that can work as a drill with wood, metal, plastics, and so on. The power of the device is in the middle range and amounts to 550 W. It is not suitable for working with thick metal products, but for corrugated sheets or wood it will be optimal. At idle, the device can reach speeds of up to 750 rpm. With this screwdriver you can drill a hole in wood up to 20 mm in diameter and up to 10 mm in metal. The design is equipped with a quick-release chuck where you can install drills or bits with a diameter of up to 10 mm. The screwdriver weighs just over 2 kg, so it is comfortable to hold in your hand for a long time. The placement of the buttons is carefully thought out.

The trigger is locked, so the device is reliably protected from accidental starting, which, in turn, increases the safety of work. The torque is adjusted in steps - in one of 23 positions, which are fixed with a characteristic click. There is only one drilling mode; when using it, you will not be able to change the number of revolutions.

Advantages:

  • You can work with any materials;
  • For its price it has decent power indicators;
  • Good build quality;
  • Fits comfortably in the hand;
  • Long power cable.

Flaws:

  • Heats up quickly enough with active use;
  • All drills and bits must be purchased separately.

One of the main distinguishing features of this tool is its very long warranty period, which is as much as 5 years. The length of the power cord is also impressive - more than 4 meters, so you will rarely have to resort to extension cords. It's a decent weight, so you won't be able to hold it in your hand for a long time, but it works much more efficiently than lightweight models. And this is taking into account that manufacturers sought to reduce the weight of the equipment as much as possible - many metal parts were replaced with plastic ones, and a lightweight starter and rotor were installed in the design. The motor here is brushed, but the motor brushes can be replaced very quickly - you don’t even have to disassemble the entire housing.

The power of this domestically produced product is 300 W - not too much, but quite normal for domestic use. There are two modes of operation - drilling and screwing. In the first case, the number of revolutions at idle can reach 1400 per minute, in the second it does not exceed 400. The maximum torque is 35 Nm. The ratchet is equipped with 23 speed modes. The manufacturer has installed a quick-release chuck here that is capable of working with bits and drills with a diameter of up to 10 mm.

Advantages:

  • Fits comfortably in the hand, despite its significant weight;
  • Quite acceptable indicators of power, torque, number of revolutions;
  • Good build;
  • Long product power cable;
  • Ability to work with many materials.

2. Interskol DSh-10/320E2

Interskol DSh-10/320E2 photo

The manufacturer positions this product as semi-professional. Indeed, the capabilities of this screwdriver are quite sufficient for active use. With its help you can perform absolutely any drilling and screwing work. The product easily replaces battery-powered similar models. The model has a rubberized handle, so it will not slip out of your hands under any conditions. The weight of the product is a little more than 2 kg, but this moment has practically no effect on the comfort of use. It works quite noisily, but you can get used to it quite quickly. Users note the high build quality of the device - no cracks or gaps were found, and no extraneous creaks were detected either. The product is equipped with quick-release brushes, so they can be replaced in a matter of minutes.

The tightening speed here is very high, so when working with small screws you will need to be as careful as possible; if you set the speed too high, the screw head will simply rip off. The power consumption of the product is 320 W. The length of the product cord is about 2 meters. The cartridge is not equipped with a special braking system, so it will rotate for a long time by inertia. The ergonomics of the reverse button and trigger are thought out very carefully, so the device is easy to use regardless of the size of your palms. The decent power of the product allows you to drill holes in wood with a diameter of up to 25 mm.

Advantages:

  • Excellent build quality;
  • High power level;
  • Reliability and durability of the device;
  • The gears of the gearbox are made of high-strength metal.

Flaws:

  • The cartridge is not equipped with a braking system;
  • The kit does not include a case for storing the tool.

The first full-fledged professional model in our review, it is characterized by its low weight and easy handling, which makes it most suitable for performing a number of very wide-profile tasks. The power of the installed electric motor is quite enough to work with any materials, from wood and plastic to rolled metal. The products were manufactured using HighTorqueTechnology technology, thanks to which, when heavy loads are applied to the device, the torque doubles. This makes the device almost the most powerful among relatively cheap networked screwdrivers. The torque adjustment is 23 levels, and switching between them is stepwise. The model contains a switchable two-speed gearbox, which provides not only fast tightening of screws or self-tapping screws, but also a decent drilling speed. The speed control here is electronic.

Manufacturers have provided a soft start system that instantly stops all moving parts. The design features wear-resistant bearings. The gears of the gearbox are equipped with surface hardening, the rotor is reinforced. All these elements allow us to guarantee a long period of operation of this device. The case is lightweight, able to withstand serious impacts, and can withstand low temperatures. The handle has a soft grip; the bulk of the mass is concentrated in the area of the handle, which allows you to use the device without straining your fingers.

Advantages:

  • A long power cable, which is placed in a soft braid that will not become stiff in the cold;
  • Fits comfortably in the hand despite its considerable weight;
  • Weight distribution is optimal;
  • Perfect for working with absolutely any materials.

Flaws:

  • Not too much torque for a professional tool.

How is a drill/driver different from a regular screwdriver?

A conventional screwdriver is intended exclusively for screwing/unscrewing screws, self-tapping screws and other fasteners. We have already written about the features of choosing cordless screwdrivers, so we will not repeat ourselves. We only note that such a power tool operates at low speed (although there are also high-speed models), but with high torque. Thanks to the high torque, you can unscrew even the most stubborn screws. As standard, Shuriks are equipped with cartridges for a bat.

  • Exploitation

    10 attachments that turn the screwdriver into a multifunctional device

A drill/driver has at least two speeds: one low for tightening and one high for drilling. If a device has several speeds, this does not mean that this is a drill/driver. Their main difference is the presence of a drilling mode. Drill-drivers are equipped with a chuck (quick-clamping or specialized) in which drills can be clamped. The characteristics also indicate the diameters of the holes that the device can drill in metal and wood.

On the body of the drill-screwdriver e

On the body of the drill-driver there is a drilling mode designation, which is not present on a regular screwdriver. For example, with Metabo Power Maxx BS, modes are switched by a cuff, which is responsible for adjusting torque. Although such a device cannot drill large holes like a regular corded drill, it is still quite sufficient for solving simple home repair tasks.

No. 3. Types of screwdrivers by power type

Corded screwdrivers

These screwdrivers are mains powered, and this comes with a number of pros and cons.

The advantages of corded screwdrivers include:

  • higher power, so professional tools predominate among network tools. Not all manufacturers produce household powered screwdrivers;
  • there is no need to constantly monitor the battery charge level and recharge it - plug the plug into the socket and you are good to go;
  • the operating time is not limited by the duration of the battery, there is no need to take time off to recharge the battery;
  • lighter weight compared to cordless models, because the design of the tool does not include a battery.

Minuses:

  • connection to the network. When assembling furniture, wires only get in the way, and when performing construction work, there is not always access to electricity. In addition, the outlet may be located far away, and then you will have to additionally use an extension cord. When working at heights, corded screwdrivers are extremely inconvenient.

Cordless screwdrivers

This type of instrument has become more widespread. Such devices are powered by batteries, the capacity and charging time of which can vary significantly.

Advantages:

  • independence from the availability of electricity and the location of the outlet, which gives freedom of action. Work can be performed at heights, in hard-to-reach places, and practically in the field, and the wires will not get tangled underfoot;
  • the scope of application is wider, which follows from the autonomy and mobility of the tool.

Minuses:

  • dependence on the battery charge level, the need to constantly monitor this parameter and periodically charge the batteries. Experts recommend taking a spare battery with the cordless screwdriver: while one is charging, the second is working. It is preferable to choose batteries that charge quickly;
  • In terms of power, a cordless tool is inferior to a mains one. The torque may not be enough to work with hard materials, but there are exceptions here - professional cordless screwdrivers are quite powerful and reliable.

Professionals know that choosing a cordless screwdriver is even more difficult than a corded one, because it is necessary to take into account not only the functions of the device itself, but also the characteristics of the battery.

The first thing you should pay attention to is the type of battery:

  • lithium-ion batteries, Li- Ion . This is the most popular and modern type of battery, used everywhere, not only in screwdrivers. The advantages include low weight, sufficient power, no memory effect, long life of charge/discharge cycles (about 3000 or more), high charging speed. The downside is the relatively high cost, so this is a good option for regular, but not one-time work. This battery is not designed to operate in cold weather. In order for the battery to last as long as possible, it is better not to discharge it less than 15% and not to charge it more than 90%. Service life is about 3 years;
  • nickel-cadmium, Ni-Cd . They are highly resistant to low temperatures and voltage surges. On the other hand, they have a pronounced memory effect, so it is better to discharge such a battery completely and charge it completely so as not to reduce its capacity. The battery can withstand about 1000-1500 charge/discharge cycles, but it takes a long time to charge - about 7 hours, so it is better to have a spare battery. The battery weighs a lot, but it costs the least. Service life is about 5 years;
  • nickel metal hydride, Ni-MH. Such batteries are becoming more and more popular, they are characterized by their low weight, low resistance to low temperatures, and the memory effect is not pronounced. The big plus is minimal self-discharge, and the minus is the price;
  • lithium polymer batteries, Li-Pol, are used in screwdrivers extremely rarely. These are capacious, but not very durable batteries.

In addition, it is worth paying attention to the battery capacity in Ah : the higher it is, the longer the screwdriver can work without recharging. Another important parameter is voltage in Volts. The maximum power that can be obtained from a cordless screwdriver directly depends on this indicator.

Typically, the voltage varies from 9 to 36 V. For simple work, you can take a 9 V model: these are compact tools for infrequent use. A 12 V screwdriver is an excellent option for a household tool, suitable for many home repairs . A 14 V screwdriver is the golden mean; screwdrivers with 18 V or more are already a tool for professionals.

Combination screwdrivers

If you are professionally involved in repair and construction work, then you can have both types of screwdrivers in your arsenal. However, there is an alternative option - combined models with the ability to be powered from the mains and a battery, although their choice is not very large.

FAQ

Which is better: a drill, a drill-driver or just a screwdriver? Considering the variety of tasks that a power tool must solve in the household, the optimal choice would be a universal impact drill-driver. This model is a universal solution, both in terms of functionality and cost of the product.

What is the difference between a screwdriver and a drill? The screwdriver has a narrow specification: working with fasteners, drilling. The drill is distinguished by great functionality, including drilling, chiseling, mixing compounds, etc.

How to choose batteries for a screwdriver?

There is a lot of information on this issue on the Internet, but it all boils down to the conclusion that it is best to buy nickel-cadmium batteries, they are safer to use and have a longer service life than nickel-metal hydride batteries.

Criteria for choosing a cordless screwdriver

Battery-powered screwdrivers have some differences that you should pay attention to when purchasing:

  • Battery Type.
  • Battery capacity.
  • Torque.
  • Rotational speed.
  • Cartridge.
  • Additional options.

The most important of these characteristics is the battery type.

There are three common types of batteries for screwdrivers:

  1. Nickel-cadmium. They are designated Ni-Cd. This type is considered the most popular, as it combines reliability, energy intensity and low cost. The service life of such batteries is up to five years. But these batteries make the tool much heavier.
  2. Nickel metal hydride. Designated Ni-MH. These batteries are lighter than nickel-cadmium batteries. But they do not work at low temperatures, take a long time to charge and last less.
  3. Lithium-ion (Li ion). The most modern batteries. They weigh little and are quite compact and charge quickly. However, these batteries do not work in cold weather and last no more than two years. In addition, the battery will have to be protected from complete discharge, overheating and shock - otherwise it will become faulty.
