How to hang blinds - step-by-step instructions for correctly installing vertical and horizontal models

There are twelve types of blinds. Each of them has its own distinctive characteristics. Initially, all blinds are usually divided into vertical and horizontal.

Horizontal blinds are more popular for decorating home spaces than public spaces. This is due to the fact that they take up less space than vertical ones. The structure is not massive; it can be mounted using drilling or without it. Horizontal models are made from thin logs of wood: cherry, beech, oak, yew, metal alloys, fabric and bamboo.

Installation of blinds

Vertical blinds are more often found in the design of spacious offices, hospital rooms, classrooms, and rooms with large panoramic windows. They are made from French jacquard, linen, polyester and thin plastic. Fabrics are pre-treated with special dust-repellent and antistatic agents. They are easy to care for and clean from dust, which is very important for rooms with a high degree of traffic.

Depending on the type of structure, finishing materials, size and appearance, the installation option is selected. There are two solutions that either involve drilling or not. Massive types of blinds, made of wood or metal alloys, are attached only with a drill, screws and brackets. Light roller blinds, mini system, roller blinds, bamboo can be mounted on special L-shaped brackets or mounting tape. Let's take a closer look at the options for hanging blinds.

Varieties

Today, construction stores offer several types of blinds. Depending on the specific type, the features of fastening curtains change.

Horizontal blinds

You can find several varieties of horizontal blinds on sale. The lamellas in them are installed horizontally, which explains the name of the design. The thickness, width and type of material can be customized. The structure can be attached inside the frame, to the frame itself, to the slope or on top of the window block .

Horizontal blinds are most often installed in institutions

These blinds are installed in offices, production facilities and other places. These designs are universal - if desired, you can find horizontal blinds in almost any color and shade.

Vertical blinds

Due to their design features, such blinds are most often mounted on top of windows . The slats in this case are oriented vertically and are made of plastic or fabric. There are varieties on the market that differ in the length of the slats.

Vertical blinds are mainly installed in residential areas

This model is most often installed in private homes, but they are also in demand in offices. Vertical blinds are installed using self-tapping screws. As an alternative, installation to the ceiling is practiced.

Roller blinds

Roller blinds are made of fabric, completely cover the glass, and if desired, they can be raised by rolling them into a roll. Installation is carried out using brackets, screws or adhesive tape.

Roller blinds can be installed without drilling walls and doors - using double-sided tape

The need for drilling varies depending on the type:

  1. Vertical structures are mounted on top of the window or under the ceiling. In both cases you will have to drill the surface.
  2. Horizontal blinds can be attached to the top slope or to the window sashes. Without drilling, such structures can be mounted on the sashes of a window block.
  3. The interframe analogue, as you can easily guess from the name, is designed for installation inside the window itself. This option requires drilling the largest number of holes.

Dismantling

For the most part, the process of dismantling blinds for plastic windows does not have relatively strong distinctive features. The differences mainly concern the dismantling of those structures that were attached in different ways (for example, with and without drilling, using double-sided adhesive tape). Otherwise, the process of dismantling blinds for plastic windows is approximately the same and does not require too much effort. We will look at the process of dismantling each individual type of blinds and some of the features of this procedure in more detail in the following paragraphs of this article.

Roller window blinds

Rice. 17. Dismantling roller blinds.

Before dismantling the roller blinds, the following operations must be performed:

  • Roll up the fabric.
  • Disconnect the line.
  • Remove the side plugs from the bottom rod (which is the weight).
  • Disconnect the roller with the rolled web.
  • Using a screwdriver, if necessary, disconnect the brackets by unscrewing the screws attaching them to the window frame.

It should be noted that these operations must be performed with extreme caution to avoid damaging some of the fragile structural elements of roller blinds (fishing line, roller and bracket fastenings, canvas, window profile).

Horizontal window blinds

Rice. 18. Dismantling horizontal blinds.

It is necessary to pay attention to one important detail: it is much easier to dismantle small blinds that cover one window sash than large blinds that cover the entire window opening. In this case, it will be extremely difficult to dismantle it on your own, so the help of another person is needed.

Removal of horizontal blinds occurs according to the following scheme:

  • Detaching the blind rod from the brackets that hold it.
  • Removing the side plugs
  • Removing the block of slats (care must be taken to ensure that the window handle does not get caught on them and cause mechanical damage).
  • Disconnecting brackets from a window profile or wall using a screwdriver.

Vertical window blinds

Rice. 19. Disconnecting the slats of vertical blinds.

The main feature of dismantling vertical window blinds is to disconnect the slats from the cornice. Due to their large size and mobility, it is not possible to remove the entire block of lamellas at one time. Therefore, each strip will have to be disconnected one by one. In this case, it is necessary to straighten all the lamellas so that they form an even sheet and face the same direction. Before dismantling the slats, you need to remove the side plug on the cornice, then pull out the weights from the bottom of the blinds and disconnect the chain. And only then can you begin to remove the slats. The cornice is dismantled last. One last reminder: carefully carry the removed slats through the door - they may get caught on the door handle.

Cassette window blinds

Rice. 20. Structure and installation stages of cassette blinds.

Cassette window blinds are dismantled in almost the same way as their open roller counterparts. First of all, you need to assemble the blinds into a box. Then the guide strips along which the blinds move are disconnected. Then you should disconnect the cassette from the brackets holding it using a screwdriver (unscrewing should be done strictly one by one to avoid possible mechanical damage to the structure and window profile when the load on one bracket sharply increases in the case of unscrewing all the screws on only one side).

For easy installation and dismantling, purchase blinds only from those manufacturers who guarantee the high quality of their products.

Preparation and measurements

To install blinds you will need the following tools:

  • screwdriver or screwdriver;
  • pencil or marker;
  • roulette.

To ensure that all your efforts are not in vain, it is important to carry out the measurements correctly and accurately - only then will the design work effectively. In addition, it must be located absolutely symmetrically to the glass unit. Blinds attached with adhesive tape are more tolerant of errors - they can be corrected if desired. For analogues with self-tapping screws, additional holes will need to be made, which is unlikely to benefit the beauty of the window; flaws here are unacceptable.

At the first stage of installing blinds, measure the width and height of the window

To correctly position the structure relative to the window and floor level, you will need to measure the following parameters:

  • window opening dimensions;
  • length to the bottom edge of the curtain;
  • distance between fasteners.

For horizontal blinds installed on sashes, you will need to additionally measure the dimensions of each glass. To the results obtained, add 2 cm to the top and bottom edges and 0.5 cm to the sides .

What are they needed for?

The functions of blinds are multifaceted. They effectively protect furniture and wallpaper from sunlight, hide the room from prying eyes, make it possible to regulate the necessary flow of light, and are easy to care for. Blinds are also a very stylish window decoration. The variety of colors and materials used for their manufacture allows you to attach these curtains to any room.

There are 3 types of blinds, each of which has its own mounting nuances:

  1. Horizontal. Such models are most often used in various rooms. They can be hung in several ways: in the window itself, on each half of it separately, or on the outer wall above the window.
  2. Vertical. They successfully replace tulle and curtains in residential and office spaces. Vertical blinds can be hung by attaching them to the wall above the window opening or directly to the ceiling.
  3. Rolled. This type is the most popular in the modern world. The model performs all the functions of blinds, goes well with regular curtains and suits any interior design. Roller blinds are attached to the window using special brackets, adhesive tape, or screwed with self-tapping screws to the window bead.

Installation of vertical blinds

Installing vertical blinds is actually not as complicated a process as it might initially seem, and anyone can cope with this task. If the length of the curtain is short, then installation is carried out inside the window opening. Otherwise, the structure is installed under the ceiling or on the wall.

The algorithm of actions here is as follows:

  1. Marking. The first step is to calculate the center point of the window - it should be on the same level as the center of the cornice. To avoid mistakes, marks should be made along the edges of the structure. Places for screws should be marked on both sides approximately 0.5-0.6 cm closer to the center of the window.
  2. Rating by level. During the process, it is necessary to ensure that the slats are positioned vertically. The lower part should be 1-2 cm from the floor. A similar distance should be maintained to the window sill if installed directly into the opening.
  3. Bracket mounting. The holes for the dowels should be prepared in advance, so all that remains is to install them. The bracket is attached using self-tapping screws. Subsequently, complete clips can be installed on these elements for camouflage. When drilling into a wall, you should act very carefully, as otherwise you may break off part of the wall.

    Vertical blinds are secured with self-tapping screws to the wall or ceiling

Installation of chain and lamellas. After attaching the cornice, all that remains is to hang the slats, install the runners, and also attach the adjusting chain. An important point: the slats must be hung in the same order in which they are in the box. Otherwise, you can ruin the entire drawing (if there is one) .

Installation of blinds on plastic windows

Installation of blinds on plastic windows is a common occurrence. Most modern double-glazed windows are made of plastic. This is a fragile material, so you need to work with it carefully. Now we will look at installation options where drilling is used:

This is one of the common types. Functional features, a wide color palette, ease of care and color combinations attract buyers. That’s why it’s common in offices and public organizations. Installing vertical blinds will not take much time.

  1. It is necessary to make markings for fastening the elements.
  2. Next, attach the brackets and cornice.
  3. Place runners on the cornice and attach lamellas to them one by one.
  4. Attach weights to the control handle.
  5. Check the operation of the structure.

We install horizontal blinds on plastic windows

In most cases, horizontal slats are attached to the wall. They are able to close the window opening completely, but at the same time they look aesthetically pleasing and do not “squeeze” the space of the room. There are times when they are mounted to a window. Here, the lamella parts are attached to each sash separately. The installation system for horizontal blinds is no different from vertical options:

  1. We mark the places for fastening.
  2. We attach the brackets.
  3. We put a cornice on the brackets.
  4. Checking the length.
  5. We check the installation and operation of the mechanism.

We install blinds on plastic windows without drilling

If for some reason you do not want to drill a wall or a double-glazed window, you can use tape or special brackets. There are L-shaped brackets that are attached to the surface of the glass unit without drilling. They are easy to install and dismantle thanks to a simple latch. But, they are attached only to those doors that open. To attach the brackets to a closed sash without drilling, use double-sided mounting tape.

Thus, with the help of L-shaped brackets and tape, you can maintain the integrity of the window profile. Fastening with adhesive tape is less reliable than others, but if you do not overload the structure, it will last a long time.

Roll models are installed in almost the same way as vertical ones. One of the most affordable options for installing blinds is on two brackets, which are secured with self-tapping screws.

  1. We make markings for the details.
  2. We fasten the brackets with self-tapping screws (make sure that they are at the same level, otherwise the blinds will hang crookedly).
  3. Next, we attach the cornice with the canvas.
  4. We check the operation of the structure.

Installation of horizontal blinds

Attaching horizontal blinds to plastic windows is somewhat more complicated. The main thing is to strictly follow the instructions:

  1. The first step is to secure the upper fasteners. This is done using a screwdriver. First, the holes are prepared, after which the bracket is attached with self-tapping screws.
  2. We hang the cornice. It should be fastened until it clicks.
  3. The holes for the lower fasteners are drilled by hand. When choosing a diameter, you should take into account the dimensions of the thread retainer connecting the lamellas. Most often, horizontal blinds require additional holes on the sides. This helps to insert the clamp connected to the lamella fabric into the corners.

When installing horizontal blinds yourself, you must carefully follow the instructions.
Important: self-installation must be done as carefully as possible. Very often the slightest mistake results in the entire structure not functioning correctly.

Installation on non-standard openings

Vertical blinds can be installed on sloping and non-standard openings; they are also actively used in zoning space.

To create a curved opening, bendable guides are used to hang the slats; to fix them to the surface, it is necessary to install holders every 200-600 mm, depending on the shape of the bends and the weight of the blinds.

When installing vertical blinds with your own hands on a sloping opening, it is important that the slats move when the canvas is opened from the high side to the low. Installation is carried out as follows:

  • we assemble blinds and hang slats;
  • apply it in place, outline which line to cut the strips along;
  • remove the slats from the runners and adjust them to size;
  • return the stripes to the runners;
  • we place the assembled blinds over the opening;
  • mark the space for the bottom bracket;
  • make a hole, insert a plastic dowel element, attach the bottom bracket;
  • We hook the guide to the canvas and, moving it up/down, adjust the position of the upper bracket so that the lower edge of the curtain is strictly parallel to the window sill or floor.

Roller blinds

In the case of roller blinds, there are several mounting options, so before you start, you should choose the most convenient one. The first is installation on self-tapping screws, which in essence is no different from the option described above, the second is on a special adhesive tape, which is used instead of self-tapping screws, and in the third, the roller blind is hung on the sash.

To fix roller blinds, use brackets or adhesive tape

Important: do not forget about degreasing the plastic - it will help significantly improve the adhesion of materials.

Inter-frame curtains

Inter-frame curtains are used only for double frames. Installation of blinds of this type is somewhat more complicated than the previous ones, and the process itself will result in an inevitable violation of the integrity of the profile: you will have to drill at least two holes through which the handle and cord to control the system will be cut out.

The curtains themselves are mounted in the inner sash, or more precisely, in its upper part, and the bracket is mounted directly to the upper profile. Installing the structure is in many ways similar to working with horizontal blinds.

Inter-frame curtains are installed in double glazing

Do-it-yourself installation of the system is carried out according to the following algorithm:

  1. The window frame unwinds and the blinds are applied to the inner sash. This is used to check the size matches.
  2. Markings are made for fastening, as well as points for the cord and control handle, after which holes with a diameter of about 5 mm are drilled.
  3. The brackets are inserted into the calipers, the cords and control handles are brought out, with the cord through the lower hole.
  4. Inter-frame blinds are mounted on the sash with special inter-frame brackets.
  5. An adapter is installed on the frame, and a control handle is connected to the flexible terminal.
  6. The control handle and cord lock is installed.
  7. The frame twists back.

The blinds control element is brought out through the frame.
As you can see, the technology for installing blinds on plastic windows without drilling is completely unsuitable here. The principle itself is similar to the installation of all other design options, with the only difference being that you have to disassemble the frame, screw the bracket into the interframe space, and remove the controls through the drilled holes.

Useful tips

In order for blinds to serve for many years, you should follow some operating rules:

  1. When purchasing, you should carefully check the package and all equipment, especially fasteners. They must be of high quality.
  2. You should choose the adjustment mechanism wisely - it should be on the side that is convenient for use.
  3. Make sure that no one opens the windows while the blinds are not yet fully closed.
  4. The rotary handle must not interfere with or touch other fittings.
  5. Don't forget about periodic maintenance.
  6. It is quite possible to install blinds on windows yourself, but it is better to entrust its repair to a professional.
  7. Plastic structures are preferable: they are much easier to care for.
  8. You should not clean the system too often, this will only lead to rapid wear of the protective layer.

Installing the device yourself, as you can see, is not a difficult task at all, be it metal, plastic or wooden blinds on plastic windows. The main thing is to have quality instructions at hand. Thanks to this material, you can hang your blinds as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Ceiling mount

Thus, you can attach blinds to any ceiling. The steps for attaching to a concrete ceiling are the same as for a wall, except for the shape of the bracket. But how to hang blinds on a suspended or suspended ceiling is one of the most common questions from users.

A special swivel bracket for connection to a suspended ceiling snaps onto one of the guides of the ceiling device; further steps are the same as when installing to a wall.

It is impossible to attach the system to a ready-made tension covering; think about this in advance. In the place where it is planned to install the cornice, an embedment is made from timber of the required size under the ceiling sheet.

After installing the ceiling, fastening is carried out in the same way as for a concrete floor. Only instead of dowels, special pads are used.

Modern wooden frames have excellent thermal insulation, environmental and aesthetic properties, and they are also good for allergy sufferers.

See the instructions below for how to hang blinds on wooden windows.

  • we take measurements according to the type
  • carry out marking
  • install the bracket
  • We assemble the structure and check its functionality

Blinds have long ceased to be just protection from the sun, but have become an elegant addition to the interior. Fabric vertical blinds, replacing curtains or expensive ones with wooden slats, the choice is huge, as is the method of installing them. We hope the photos on how to hang blinds will help you make the right choice, and installation will not cause you any difficulties.
